Can a Jeremy Hastings water feature run on solar power?

JH Team

Yes! We have created smaller water features that can accommodate a solar powered pump.

This is perhaps one of our most asked questions at RHS Chelsea Flower shows and previously the answer has been no. So, it was really lovely this year, in 2026 to be able to answer with a more positive reply.

Pumps can be measured by their output for example 1000 litres per hour (lph). The larger the water feature the larger the output is required. Our most popular water features historically have been our larger spheres either the 800mm or 1m sphere. These both require a minimum of 2000lph pump. Although larger solar pumps do exist, this isn’t an option for our supplier and therefore obtaining a larger solar pump can be quite costly. Additionally, the water features are best to run all year around, namely because it helps with the water treatment if the water is running. Stagnant water can become dirty and smelly. This is why we always recommend mains powered pumps for our larger spheres.

However, we wanted to appeal to more customers, not only to accommodate the smaller gardens but an easy install with regards to the feature itself and the installation. So our water tables were created. A striking Corten steel base with the handcrafted rustic slate top. Due to its compact nature and only sitting 50cm tall this is perfect for a solar powered pump to sit inside.

The benefit to us and our customers is that our current supplier Bermuda - stock these! The additional benefit is that they also come with a lithium back up battery, so you can enjoy your water feature when the sun goes down.

The Bermuda solar pump is quick and easy to set up. They come with 5 metres of cable so the solar panels can be placed in the most sunny spot in your garden using the garden stakes. Our most recent client in the Isle of Wight, found a great spot for these panels on their shed roof!

Our water tables have a water tight connection in the middle of the feature. This allows the cable from the pump to run under the feature which sits on small legs, so the cables from the pump to the solar panels are protected.
